YIKES!

I can't believe how long it has been since I posted to my blog!!!  So much has happened, but I will just share the highlights...
Last fall I was juried into the New Hampshire Art Asc.  Last month I was juried into the Pastel Society of America and was given Signature Status which is a huge honor!  Many shows have gone by and pieces have made their way to new homes!  And now I am working on a double portrait commission and on paintings for upcoming shows I would like to enter.

My fall workshop at the Cape was a great success, and I am currently planning another for the fall in Maine so if you are interested, just let me know!

Monday morning and Friday evening classes are still on!  Spring is a great time to get started whether you are a beginner or seasoned artist trying to get motivated.  Give me a call!

In an effort to continue learning, I copied a master oil painting, 'The Oyster Gatherers of Cancale' by my favorite artist John Singer Sargent.  I was happy that it was done well enough for someone to want to own it!

Gotta get back to work - but I promise it won't take me so long until you see another post!!

Fall Lineup...

I'm cleaning up the details to my fall line up!  Visit my website to see the new fall classes schedule and for information on how to reserve your spot.  The fall plein air workshop on the Cape is filling up; you can find information for that on my website, also.  I am working on a commissioned portrait which I will post for you when it is completed.  And I am getting ready for the Andover Art in the Park which is quickly approaching!
This painting just went to a new home:

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

It's Been Awhile...

Wow - time passes so quickly!  I was surprised to see how long ago my last post was.
There is a lot going on...currently I have pieces in two exhibits at the Newburyport Art Association.  The first is my plein air group show, "A Brush with Beauty" which runs from August 7 through the 19th.  I am showing 11 pieces.  The reception is this Saturday, from 7-9 pm.  Stop by if you can!

I have two paintings in the Newburyport Art Association's 8 Cubed exhibit, a show of 200 - 8" x 8" unframed canvases!  It opens tomorrow and the reception coincides with my plein air reception - this Saturday from 7-9pm.

There's no time to waste - I am actively working on pieces for the Andover Art in the Park outdoor show coming up in September, and the NAA's Fall Juried Shows, Parts 1 & 2 along with a few others.  I will keep you up to date on what's happening!

I have been studying portrait and figure work and decided to copy a master painting to help. I settled on my favorite painting by John Singer Sargent - The Oyster Gatherers of Cancale.  Here is what I ended up with:

Next is a photo of a recent painting that never got shown - it sold from my website the day after I posted it and is being shipped to its new home in California:

That's about all for now!

Latest Drawing

I thought I would post my most recent drawing with a few progression photos so you could see my process.
I am still learning how to draw and paint portraits and figures, and although I still have a long way to go, I was actually happy with this charcoal drawing because I feel it looks like the sitter.
Here is the initial stage:

After I got the placement and angle of the face (which was quite tricky!), I began to rough in the shoulders and body, which you can see in the next shot...

At this stage, I felt as though she was 'floating' or lost in the space of the paper, so I added some darks to the background...

Finally, I go in and finish any area I think needs work, still trying to maintain a sense of loosenss and softness.

Here is the finished drawing.  Feel free to leave any questions or comments!!

Parker River, Newburyport

I have been in 'learning mode' lately, studying portraits, taking a portrait class and copying Old Masters' works in color and grayscale in oils.  It's more difficult than I had anticipated.  I painted this small painting when I needed a break in between...it's painted on Kitty Wallis sanded paper using mostly Terry Ludwig pastels and some of my new fav's, Diane Townsends.  I did a quick watercolor underpainting and followed up with the pastels and contrary to my usual snail-pace, I finished this painting in one sitting!

On another note, I am happy to say that my two entries to the Newburyport Art Asc.'s Winter Juried Show, Part 2 were accepted into the show.  Visit www.newburyportart.org for details about the show.  I will post pictures of my entries soon!

Lastly, in addition to adding a morning class to my schedule, I am in the process of adding a one-day workshop...check my site soon for details!

thanks,
robin

Happy New Year!  I have so much planned for the new year including classes, workshops & various shows and will update my website with details soon!
I am continuing to focus my attention on figures and portraits, including the above piece that I am currently working on...."Waiting", a painting of a young expectant mother waiting for her husband to return from overseas...and for their new arrival.  I also have some exciting news to share with you in the near future...!

Thank You!!

What a great turnout this weekend for Amesbury's Open Studio weekend!  It was great to see everyone.  Thanks once again for all of the support you give me - personally and career wise - I am so lucky to have all of you.  Instead of showing you pieces I sold, I wanted to show you a painting I finished this week.  I really loved the light coming through the sail which is what I was aiming to capture.  I will be showing this piece at the upcoming Lowell's Boat Shop Annual Holiday Show in early December.  Visit my website for details!
Thanks again and again!

What Fun!

Friday evening I returned from a 3 day figure/portrait workshop in Vermont.  I learned a lot including using an alla prima approach which I had only used in my plein air landscape painting and I met some nice new people from as far away as England...now I am fueled to paint so keep your eyes open for some more portrait and figure work!  This is a study I did on the 2nd day of 'Lara'.

Thank You!

Last Saturday I participated in the Friends for Peace Wet Paint Auction...the conditions were a bit tricky with the rain and mist considering I worked in pastel!  Although I wimped out and painted from my car with the luxuries of a heated seat, music, food and warmth, it was a bit squishy and I wasn't able to stand back and view my work as it progressed.  Above is a picture of what I came up with...thank you to person who not only invested in my work, but also donated to a great cause!!
